Float
In this project, I planned and built my lacrosse team's homecoming parade float. My goal for this project was to design a large rotating lacrosse stick to create a more aesthetic float. I did this using various readily available materials. Overall, I succeeded in my goal by winning first place and the system worked mostly to perfection.
First, I planned out how I would approach the design. I confirmed that I would use a small lazy susan bearing to help the 6in diameter lacrosse stick rotate. I would also use a small 12V motor that would be in contact with the side of the lazy susan in order to power continuous rotation.Â
After planning the materials and design methodology, I moved on to actual design and fabrication. I began with a basic box contructed by 12in 2x6s (the lazy susan was 10in in diameter). I purchased a large PVC pipe mount to attach the motor to one of the side walls. This allowed for me to adjust the horizontal position of the motor to find the optimal compression for the contact based power system. Once I assembled this part after designing, I connected a simple control system that allowed for me to adjust the speed with a knob. Finally, I added a top to the box that fit around the shaft for more stability
The device worked amazing in initial testing! It rotated slowly and consistently, showcasing full control. After initial testing, the rest of the team mounted it to the trailer. Though the tilt of the trailer during the parade created a variable compression for the power system, the stick was still able to rotate most of the time. We also won first place for the parade contest, which is a huge completion for the lacrosse program.
